    Hi,
When in 5th gear and am driving at 120KPH the engine is reving at about 4K RPM but it sounds like it wants another gear. Am way off the red limit!!! what could be the problem? Any help much appreciated.

I have tested the clutch by : i) applying parking brake
ii) Engaging the the third or fourth gear while engine is idling
iii) Slowly releasing the clutch pedal and the engine cuts out immediately.

I believe this says the clutch is disengaging properly and is in good working condition (correct me if am wrong on this one)

Yeah sounds like the clutch is working fine. Hopefully you'll get a response from one of the other guys who knows a little more about golfs, i dont have much experience!
Has anything been done or changed with your car recently?

Sounds more like 3rd gear territory, the gearshift linkages working okay?

How would you test if the gear linkages are working ok? If the gear linkages are to blame, assuming am in 5th (in which case I would be in 3rd gear), if I downshift to 4th wouldn't the car get more quiet since it has gone into a higher gear. In my case it gives the typical whine when you down shift from a higher gear and the car was comforatable at that gear. Another thing that comes to my mind, what would be the effect of a partially blocked exhaust pipe? wouldn't it cause this type of behaviour due to the extra back pressure due to the restriction?

if it were the gear linkage and therefore you were not in 5th, but in fact 3rd, then surely you would notice engine breaking when you changed up from 4th to 5th, and increased pull up hills in 5th than 4th... in my 1.3 (which benefically has a clock instead of a rev meter) it also appears that it wants another gear in 5th, but i get the feeling that it is down to road noise. which is shockin compared to my mum's new polo match!
