Hi all am a newbie to the site.

I have just paid a deposit on a 2004 (54 plate) 3.0 V6 TDI Quattro and am more than a little concerned about the amount of posts regarding the multitronic gearbox. However the vast majority of posts don't seem to mention the V6 Quattro version, does this have a different type of multitronic thats maybe a bit more reliable?

Or would it be a wise move to attempt to get my deposit back and look elsewhere. Would be a real shame to have to do that as the car is fab in all other respects.

    Thanx

To my knowledge, Multitronics aren't built in Quattros, just 2WD. You may have a Tiptronic.

That's how it is on the 98-04 A6 range anyway, but I *think* it is still like that.

Thanks for the reply. Until yesterday I had never heard of a multi or tiptronic, generally are the tiptronics more reliable than the multis or do they also have there fair share of problems? Am guessing if they are fitted to the more powerful quattros they musr be a more robust box or is this just wishful thinking?

As Kite said, on the quattros they fitted conventional auto gearboxes with a torque convertor. Still, i would change the oil every 40k or sooner than that !

Appreciate all the replys. It does sound to me like the tiptronic box is generally more reliable than the multitronic, have rang Inde Tech who confirmed that I should have no probs with the Tip. Am using all the concerns over the multi to try and beat Sheffield Audi with a big stick to give me a much reduced extended warranty.

Also spoke with the Service Manager at Gilders Audi Sheffield and mentioned oil changes on the Tiptronic box to him, he has said its a sealed unit and the oil would only be replaced if one of the seals leaked and needed to be renewed. Does anyone know any different to that?

There is less to go wrong on a Tiptronic. Audi say they are sealed units but they also say doing 20k on oil is acceptable which I would never do. Don't believe them, I'm sure you could find an independent or a gearbox specialist who would do the oil change for you.

Audi will always tell you the standard box is sealed for life. That's true.

It's just the life of the box is greater if you get the oil changed on a regular basis with the correct oil.

The choice is yours. Me I'm not into buying gearboxes, so I go for the oil change option

I have a 1.9 TDI Multitronic and love the gearbox. Its important to get the fluid changed at 40k miles though. Its true that you often hear a lot of negative comments on a forum like this. Thats the nature of such things. Sometimes the criticisms are exaggerated and sometimes its just prejudice or ignorance. Sometimes its genuine straight honest advice from people in the trade who often see the less endearing aspects of the cars when things go wrong.T

The important thing is to recognise where people are coming from, what their agenda is, and make up your own mind. If the multitronic box was the disaster that some people on here make out, then Im sure Audi would not still be making them!
