  1. Question Pres-ignition lights
    #1

    Hello all,

I have tried seraching online and with this forums search tool but have not had any hits.

What lights should stay on just before starting the engine?

    It's a 1.4 SE Polo 2000 (X reg), AKK engine.

    E.g.

All the dashboard lights come up when I turn the key to just before starting the engine (airbag, EPC, etc) and then most go off execpt the battery light and the EPC (I know that this is an engine fault light and if I need to get the codes read I will). When I start the engine the EPC light and battery lights go off. Does this mean that there is a fault, but it is only at the pre-ignition stage? I can't remember if this is normal or not, I doubt it is?

The last three days my car idles erratically (if the head lights are on then they dim alot) unless I rev it slightly and then it settles down. Is it my alternator or Distributor?

I serviced my car yesterday as it needed doing (new plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and ingjection cleaner) but it hasn't made a difference which to be honest I wasn't expecting it to.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi The erratic ideling is the reason the head lights are dimming. The first thing you can do check the intake air system for leaks (unmetered air) with a leak detector spray. The seals on the injectors are prone to leaking, If you find no fault then you will need a fault code read. The throttle valve may need cleaning and then adapted to the ECU.

    Hi,
I had the codes read and there were no current faults. The only one held in the memory was 17535 Adaption Bank 1 which seems to be something like this:

I have only had the codes read and not any live diagnostic. I will give your suggestions a go.
    Thank you for the advice.

Even after owning a car for many years, reading a question like this gets you thinking!

    I have a VW Polo 1.4 TDI (2008)

What SHOULD happen during the start-up sequence?

Ignition ON (which cluster lights should come ON)
After waiting a few seconds (which cluster lights should remain ON)
Start Engine (which cluster lights should remain ON)
