I've got a similar problem on my 2000 Golf 4 TDi - the red display does light up sometimes, then it goes dim or most annoying at night just flickers between bright and dim.
Any ideas on this please ? Thinking of removing the cluster and taking a look for dry joints or loose connectors etc.
Someone here must have done this before ??
