I got me new Passat in Feb this year and whilst we were waiting for deliver, i had a golf GT Sport with DSG - it was a temp rental as my other golf had to go back in december, this golf was an AD** and the funny thing was i went in to Smith Knight Faye (stockport) to get some rattles sorted out on the Passat and the Golf was on the forecourt for sale.

I have a pal who owns a car rental company and he has a deal where they get them on a buy back scheme from VW where he keeps them until the have 12K on them and then they go back to the dealer. He allows a lot of pals to buy one keep it till 12K and then give it back, this works by you give him full price up front less the massive discount he has (you pay what he pays), keep the car until 12K and then he gets a figure on return, it works out that the car actually costs you about £200 a month over the course of say 6 months. You then start again with a new car, most of his usually end up on the SNF forecourts. He is changing between 15 - 20 VW's a month, incidentally he does this with Audi, Porsche, Merc, BMW, OVLOV etc etc etc You name it and he will get you one. The only thing is that the car has to be in A1 condition when you hand it back or thats when it starts to cost more. His lemon cars that have been abused tend to get auctioned off anyway. His best mate has a GOLF GT Sport dsg, a 911 4s and and an auto TDI Polo for the MRS all on the same terms. He has had about 12 cars off him over the last 3 years and i would have bought any of them.

My thoughts on the rentals are if it looks like its been used like a dodgem then keep clear, however if its gleaming with 12K on the clock no scratches, clean interior etc etc i would by one anyway, not all rentals are abused.

I even treated my short term rental to a good Zaino polishing as it gleaming was a refection on me, i also treat my long term leases the same way and give them the Zaino treatment once a month, i would buy one that i have had even after 3 years and 80K.

Its still very wrong that VW are telling you that they are EX VW cars as they are most certainly not.

Sorry to waffle but thats my 2 pennies popped in.

Interesting story fingers!!!. To be honest, mine was A1 when I got it and has been since, as I said earlier I've had a few niggles but only the same ones as everybody. Fuel pump, dash rattles, wishbone bushes, dealer been better than most I've known, B pillar creaks need sorting but that only happens when its warm!!!! I thought about giving them a call about the V5 saying Avis but I don't see the point as I'm happy with what I've got & the price I paid.

    I understand your point gazza.
iam relatively happy with the car exceptingthat the car was mis sold to me and had 3 faults that should have been picked up on even the most basic pre sales check!

Had the salesman on the phone today ( previously only spoken to the sales manager)
Tried to have a real go at me and accused me of lying
Said I never asked the question as if I did he would have shown me the V5.

went on to say he couldnt remember when we had the conversation during the sales pitch/test drive and couldnt remember what he said exactly regarding the ownership ( a direct contradiction to what the sales manager said earlier) but he DEFINATELY REMEMBERS ME NOT ASKING THAT QUESTION!!

Apart from the obvious lines "what is in it for me to lie to you?" err a car sale maybe and "i am not that desperate for a sale to lie" mmmm
he came out with a classic line when i stated that i specifically asked the question he said "you did not but I bet you wish you had"

now what does that say to you?

my take on that is probably very cynical

    what do you guys say?

I agree It is frustrating stringman?
You paid a fab price for the car, if they sort the faults and you are happy with that, I would back off for the sake of your sanity. I don't think the cars were used by joe public, I think they may have been with one person who probably took good care, they have been sold under the VW approved warranty till the 3 years is up.

I've only just seen this thread so joining late on,

I got my Passat from the VW dealer in Chelmsford (can't remember the dealer's name but it may be Lindvale) but it is an AD06, but I never asked if it was an ex-hire car. They did tell me it was ex-VW and was through Inchcape who do lease cars, not sure if some of these are for hire car companies.

The mileage was 18,000 when I got it and have had a few things sorted under warranty but nothing major. I later found signs of repair work carried out but nothing to concern me in any way.

The car was cheaper than most advertised at the time and 2.5-3K cheaper than dealers in central Scotland.

One of the many things that have come up is the statement that my car was a VW fleet car. But as we now know it was in fact owned by Avis.
So rather than getting into the slanging match of "I asked the question, Oh no you didnt" (well it is panto season) I thought i would have the back up plan of the fact that they both agreed that it was stated as a fleet car

But how would you define a fleet car

and by extention how would you define a "VW fleet car"

I obviously have my own interpretation but would like to here what the unbiased forumites think

    Thanks

A "VW Fleet Car" is to me, a car that was allocated to a VW employee, usually in a corporate office role. That is their company car for the period of 6 months, 12 months or x-miles, and after this it, it is offered to VW dealers to be sold off.

A "VW Fleet Car" is NOT a car that VW lease to a rental company, who in turn lease it out to punters who often want to test the theory that a "rental goes faster and harder than your own".

I imagine that VW's answer to that would be that it is part of their fleet because they still own it, and until it is actually sold they continue to do so.

If it's been thrashed it might be no bad thing - at least any latent problem should have surfaced. Our Laguna was ex rental, bought with 19,000kms on the clock, and it has had no problem that I could associate with that in the 11 years and 170,000kms that we've had it. It's not got a turbo, so I imagine it would have spent its early life 'foot through the floor' if the average Frenchman drove it!

My interpretation of a VW 'fleet car' is that is it likely to be a VW owned car, such as one offered to employees or management on a short term lease basis. I certainly do not expect a VW fleet car to be an ex-hire car which has been previosuly been registered to companies outside VW such as Avis, Hertz etc. These are called VW 'trade-ins'!

The real back-bone to the points raised in this thread, is that dealer staff are blatently telling big porkies under the security of VW's branding, which is afterall, part of the wider VAG group - which promotes confidence in its customer service, quality and professionalism etc etc etc

If I had been told the truth about my car being ex-rental, I would have been able to make a more informed choice as to whether to buy the car or not. In my circumstance, I was specifically told the car was NOT ex-rental, so I bought it. Whilst I appreciate that in hindsight I should have checked the V5, but no-where does VW's marketing hype encourage me to mistrust their professional representatives and staff. I buy from manufacturer dealerships because they make promises, that after all , I pay over the odds for!!
