2000 Audi A4 1.9TDI with 100,000+ miles. Super, well-maintained car. Comes on for 2 secs at start-up only. Checked the brake fluid level - OK. ABS warning light does not come on any time. All brake pads and discs replaced recently. Car parked at home facing up a small slope. Is it likely to be a cold weather thing related to the fluid level sensor (or something else). I feel it's something simple, because there is are no problems driving and braking (not tested it hard on wet roads though. Do owners sometimes remove ABS fuses to pass MoTs, ie the ABS does actually have a minor problem (I'm a bit cynical sometimes!? Any ideas? Dave

Wow! I'm overwhelmed by the response guys. Never mind, I've found my way around the forum and learned enough I think from other posts to make a start....
I'll try to eliminate the phenomenon by taking the following steps in sequence:
Check the tyre pressures OK, probably not necessary, but I'll do it anyway, 'cos it's not been done for a while.
Top up the brake fluid level just that bit more (the level sensor can be a bit sensitive to moisture in damp, cold weather esp. if on a slope).
Charge the battery (it's a pain getting to the brackets, but what the hell) - and replace it if necessary.
Get behind the front wheels (if my back will take it) to check the connectors to the sensors to the inner pads.
Get Audi to do their standard relay 'fix' for this apparently known issue.

Hope this clarifies everything, without having to spend an hour searching for the answers, for those with the same problem. Dave

Thanks Diesel -a4, but I believe the sensors and associated electronics are controlling supplies to the warning light blubs integrated into the dashboard (and there are no damp/condensation problems). I'm not inclined to rip out the dash so I'll proceed as I planned thanks, Dave
