Right i bought a 97 A4 1.9 TDI SE 110 and the heater only ever put out luke warm air at best i did a flush of the system in case the heater matrix was blocked i refilled with coolant now if i put the heater on at all it just steams up the windows in the car i have to drive round with the the temp set on lo and everything is fine but as soon as i turn the heat up to even 18 O/c it gives out a puff of smoke through the vents and it,s steamy windows time again There's a faint smell thats like hot rubber but the system does not seem to be airlocked.

It sounds like the matrix is leaking this would account for the smell and the steam.M

Bad news dude. I had a 1990 passat that I flushed the rad and the same problem happened. Steam from the vents and fogged up windows and nothing but cool air. I froze as well for a couple of weeks. What obviously happened was the flush flushed out all the rusty crap that was sealing possible leaks as the car was rather old and when they were freed thus the leaks. My heating radiator (the small one just inside the dash) had to be replaced.
My solution was the dashboard was stripped apart and a new rad installed.
Hopefully the Audi is easier to fix. Should be one would think.
    Good luck

May be some Rad weld might work.

Depending on where the leak is rad weld may work. No sense going to extremes when there could be a quick long term solution.

Had an 81 Camero Z28 that developed a rad leak (again after a flush) and rad weld did the job just fine. Saved a bundle by not having to replace the rad.
