smoke from wheel arch

Hi all, I am new to the world of vw and have just recently purchased a transporter swb window van to cart my dogs to the park. I have only had it a couple of weeks but last week i was on my to... you guessed it, the park, and when i parked up and walked to the near side i could hear a 'whirring' sound. As i looked closer the noise seemed to stop and then a puff of smoke appeared from the top of the wheel arch! I thought perhaps i left the handbrake on by mistake so i did'nt bother going to vw, but it is bothering me a bit. Should i be worried? It is a 2.5 tiptronic 07 plate. Any advice would be appreciated.

Most likely to be a puff of smoke from the auxiliary water heater that is mounted just under the N/S/F door.
