    Hi

I have a 1.8 Mk 3 Golf driver 1.8 spi, to which i have obtained a 2.0 litre mk3 gti 8 valve engine, well so i have been told.

The engine itself has some identifying marks on it. On the back 2.0, which i guess donates to engine size, 16F on the front top right hand corner of the block, 92 about a cylinder to the left of the previous number, on the front lower next to the left of the dipstick entering the block there is a 10 digit number, possibly 048103021B with a vw and audi sign directly below.

I think the latter is the engine number but can anyone help or tell me where i can find what these numbers correspond to.

    Thanks Ryan

Hi 048103021b is a part number The engine number consists of up to nine characters (alphanumeric). The first part (maximum 3 characters) makes up the “engine code”, and the second part (6 characters), the “serial number”. If more than 999,999 engines with the same engine code are produced, the first of the six characters is replaced with a letter.

The engine number (“code letters” and “serial number”) can be found on the front on the joint between engine and gearbox.
Additionally there is a sticker on the toothed belt guard with “engine code” and “serial number”.
Engine codes ARZ , AUM and AUQ, the “engine code” is also stamped on the engine lifting eye.
