if your system was faulty, the esp light would be on all the time, have you made sure the switch is pluged in to the loom, you might want to get it scaned, that will tell you what is wrong with it.

The button itself does not light up on being pressed - look for the yellow ESP light on the dashboard (centre-left of speedo dial) when you press it. Mine spends most of its time illuminated except when it's icy or extremely wet outside

the switch on my bora lights the letters ESP in yellow when ON.
in this state, the yellow light on the dash is OFF until the wheels spin,
and then the dash light flashes as it detects a wheel spinning.
if the yellow light on the dash is on permanantly, then you HAVE A FAULT.
    regards,
    stewy.

There's no fault on mine - I turn it off most of the time (hence the winking smiley!) When ESP is turned off the light on the dash is constantly on, when the engine is shut off the state of the ESP is reset to on.

I had this the other week when a customer was fretting that it didn't work. I took one look at the car and knew why, the car didn't have ESP. On pulling out the switch, nothing was plugged into it or even there to plug into it. They had just bought the car.

Thanks all! Makes sense! Whilst we are on the matter, if weather is fine, is there any advantage in having it turned off, ie driving experience, fuel consumption?

I can't remember what was on there when I bought the car almost 3 years ago but they were soft, cheap, had crap grip and didn't last long! I've changed them twice since - once for Michelin Primacy about 6 months after buying the car, circa July 2006 and again in August this year for Goodyear Excellence (both on the standard rims)

I find that the engine is slightly quicker to respond when ESP is turned off. Fuel consumption is more or less the same when you drive gently.

Although of course I compare everything to my other car, which is somewhat quicker (when it's not in a million pieces all over the garage!)
