    Hi all,
my first post, please forgive me if the description is a bit wordy...

I have browsed some threads, but the problem here seems to be slightly diffrent.

Trying to work out the problem with my friend's Passat.

Vehicle details: 2002 1.9 TDI 130 AVB engine.
In the past it had a problem with the injector wiring, which was changed and resolved the problem.

While driving at about 3k RPM suddenly started smoking with lots of white smoke,
when released gas, engine continued to increase revs until was stopped with the ignition key.

Every time it was restarted since then smoking continued and engine idled very irregular
as if one of the injectors was not working. With little push on a gas pedal engine
was going into this uncontrollable revs increase until switched off with key again.

When I looked at it, in addition to white smoke, and this uncontrollable 'overboost',
exhaust was spitting out oil, and can consume about a pint in 10 min.

Turbo was completely knackered, so it was reconditioned and put back on today.
I grossly checked vacuum pressure hoses, they seemed ok.

When I started the car first time with reconditioned turbo it idled with more then usual amount of smoke,
but much less than before. Engine idled regular and sounded right.
But with revs above 2k it still goes into this uncontrollable revs increase
with huge cloud of white smoke and exhaust spitting oil until you kill the engine.

I noticed that what I think is the EGR valve gets stuck in open position even after gas pedal is released.
After I kill the engine it closes only after 10 seconds...

There is no oil in the coolant, so I asume that the head gasket is fine.
I dont understand why the valve gets stuck in open position
and how such a large amount of oil manage to escape into exhaust...

    Many thanks in advance!

Clean the intercooler out!!! it will be full of oil and the turbo is pushing it into engine and the engine is running on it.

You are lucky the engine turned off and didnt keep running on oil dont attempt to run it again until all the oil that the failed turbo seals left in the intake pipes and intercooler is cleaned out. Best stuff to use is probably a weak concentraction TFR. dont use brake cleaner for obvious reasons lol.

Intercooler is front Near side underneath/behind bumper.
You need to get most of the oil out like smokey said.
That Valve you are looking at is the cut out valve to stop the engine from running on oil by shutting off the air supply (just after ignition off).
It will still smoke for a wile after you have done that it will just have to burn out.

    Many thanks for the replies!

Somehow I didnt think about oil flooding the whole intake system
    including the intercooler!

But why as it gets to about 2k RPM the engine enters a mode where
revs go up as if with a full throttle, even after the gas pedal was released,
and the engine has to be stopped by turning the ignition off. If the valve is
suppose to stop the engine from running, as Steve said, and it seems like a
logical reason, then why it looks like it doing the opposite..? Does presence
of oil in the intake mixture makes engine rev up like crazy?

Just trying to understand the mechanics.

The engine does run on oil as on diesel, thats why they called oil burners. As the others members sayd, you lucky you did not kill the engine....

Thank you for info once again.

dismentled the whole air intake system between turbo and engine yesterday....

never seen anything like that before!!! the bottom pipe had almost 2 pints of old oil.
all top pipes after the intercooler and the valve got thick layer of hardened greese.

looks like turbo have been dieing over some time pumping oil into the air intake.
i wonder how polluted the engine is now...

That will be ok, just take it on a steady drive on the motorway for a few hours to get the cat up to operating temperature, then it will burn off all the oily deposits off the cat. When you can see other drivers getting close to you, you know that the smoking stopped !
