I have a 2003 Polo 1.4 TDi which I was foolish enough to have remapped for free by a friend who was dying to try out some gimmick he bought on an auction site.

Basically... It killed the ECU. When the key is turned the glow-plug light does not show and the fuel pump doesn't switch on. When they tried reading the fault codes there was nothing happening. The reader says ECU not found.

We couldn't locate the correct ECU (038 906 019 LB, EDC15P+) so we tried one from another VW diesel with the same first 6 numbers. (A VW breaker in Colchester told us it would work, no problem). After fitting it , when I put the key in, the glow-plug light comes on as it should, but still no fuel pump and this time the orange 'key' light flashes.

Obviously the breaker just tried his luck, but we got a refund in the end.

Has anyone ever come across a totally dead ECU? Is this something that can be re-programmed? Does anyone know where I can get a used ECU from or get my own unit repaired?

    ouch! silly mistake buddy!!

anyways it sounds like some of the files on your ECU are corrupt or deleted and are no longer readable by the car.

it looks like you might need a new ECU, but at the ame time it may be more complicated than that.

Have you checked the wiring loom for any damage? You do know that your car ill now definatly be out of warranty matey? you may even neeed new keys, especially if your having a new ECU fitted.

its not as simple as a straight ECU swap, each car has slightly different data ffor the immobiliser etc, and learning data.

the light you comment on sounds like the car does not rcognise the key, therefore will refuse to start. You have taken a brain from another car, and the immobiliser data with it.

contact VW or a local specialist and see what they have to say... Might be lookin at a few grand +

Find a good re-mapper and see if they have a stock file that can be flashed in.. If not new chip time of ECU...

    Not good !

    Thanks guys.

Rydale 13: I've been told that leaving the key in the ignition and turned on for 15mins resets the key code. The car is an 03 and is out of warranty anyway

motecmike: The ECU cannot be read at all, so nothing can be flashed to it. I have the original map saved to disk, but there is no way of reloading it at present.

I've spoken to a univeristy-stupid (prefer to call themselves students! lol) doing an Electronics Masters. He says if the main chip can be removed (de-soldered) it can be completely reprogrammed in an interface module. But it means I need to get another ECU to copy the data from first. He also says the key will probably need to be recoded but that's a minor thing.

So that leaves me in the same boat, in a certain creak without a paddle! I still need to find the correct ECU.

    Bosch 0 281 011 206
    VW 038 906 019 LB
    Diesel EDC15P+
    5101

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it'd be a great help!

As I said before some re-mappers like REVO have a lot of stock files that can be flashed to the ECU..(no need to do a read) Try that road
