My 2001 Passat 130 with 102K on the clock has developed the dreaded going into ‘limp home’ mode. I took the car to a VW specialist who performed diagnostics and confirmed all the various sensors on the car (MAF, N75 etc) were working correctly therefore it was the turbo sticking. The Turbo was sent to a specialist who cleaned it all up but when it was re-installed on the car although the car ran better after a period of time it would go in limp mode. All the sensors and hoses for the turbo system were replaced and the problem was still present. The Turbo was sent away again to the same specialist who found a further problem with the blades sticking and trimmed a bit off them however when the turbo was reinstalled on the car it still went into limp mode, the garage also mentioned that the wastegate actuator rod was very hard to move. The VW garage then swapped the turbo with another on a donor car and my car ran fine. The turbo is back with the turbo company for a 3rd time who have confirmed that there is nothing wrong with the turbo when ran up on there rig. Hence my question is there anything else that would cause the wastegate actuator rod to ‘stick’ ?

the only thing likely to make the rod stick, is corrosion, debris or its bent

the question you should perhaps investigate, is why the light reappears, not why the rod may stick....theres no certainty that theres a def prob with the rod remember.

Which light ? If it is the engine management light then it has never come on. The problem of going into 'limp mode' normally only occurs after 10 minutes of driving in 4th \ 5th gears at about 2000 rpm. The turbo is due back form the repair company for a 3rd time today and they have stated they have carried out a modification to the unit but we do not know what it is yet.
