Audi A4 TDI Gearbox Codes

Hi

New to this site/ posting so bear with me!

I have a 1997 R plate A4 Avant 19 tdi with 95k on the clock. Recently it has started crunching 3rd so think the synchro has gone and also 1st gear selection has started playing up.
Prior to this for about 2 months the clutch has been judering, suspect the springs in the plate? I meant to do it before now but........

Anyway, I contacted the Audi dealer with Chassis number and reg and he said the gearbox code was DHL.
Local breaker has a DHU (from memory)

Does anyone know if the gearboxes are the same externaly/ clutch spline and a direct replacement even if the code is different?
Does anyone know who can tell me the ratio's go with what gearbox code?

Any advice or previous experience of the code saga would be appreciated as it's a bit of a minefield!
