    Hi,

    I recently got our lass a MK5 TDI 105 SE, (5 sp)

When i have been driving it i have noticed a differance in engine noise / tone at 2800 rpm to 3100 rpm..

When the revs get to around 2800 the tone of the engine seems to increase a bit under load and then fades out at 3100 rpm..

Theres no power loss etc, just this increase in tone.. Once the engine has got to 3100rpm it goes back to normal again..

Has anyone else noticed this on theirs??

I tend to only really hear it in 5th gear, however it is noticable in 4th..

its a hard one to explain really..... just think of it as..... brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRbrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrr

    Any thoughts??

    Cheers

    Rick

I thought I'd check this in my 1.9 TDI Mk V. I couldn't detect any change in engine noise/tone as it passed 3000rpm. I accelerated hard but smoothly in 3rd gear from about 30mph to 60mph.

If you were reaching over 3000rpm in 5th gear you must have been going some!

I also don't recognise this noise.

I think the engine is not refined at low revs but once above 1500rpm mine is pretty smooth through to the limit.

    Cheers for the input guys..

    Intresting...

I have done it again today... Cant really hear it in 3rd or 4th... only in 5th from around 2800 to 3100 again... im wondering if at that point in 5th its hitting maxium torque and then just backing off a litte at the end of the rev range...

    Cheers for your help..

    Rick

i have just got a 1.9 TDI and have the same noise but only in 5th. Nothing to be worried about just when your hitting around XXmph seems to get noisier.

I bought mine at auction yesterday. on a 56 plate with 40k. my other car is an 2000 X A4 tdi 1.9 tdi PD which has done 200k.The first thing I noticed when I drove it was the same noise you described. Sounds like the noise you get when your tuning an old manual radio to find a station. Happens in same revs and only really in 2nd and 3rd gear. Fine in 5th on the moptorway. My Audi makes no such noise so this is concerning. Its still under warrnaty so will take it to the dealers to get their view. I'll let you know how I get on
