Having read lots of Forum threads on Long-Life versus yearly/10,000 mile servicing, I've decided to play safe and change my regime to the later when I have my Golf TDI 140 serviced next January. This will be convenient as the Mot will be due and I can kill two birds with the one stone.
This will be an "early" service: the computer says that a service is required in 251 days or 6,500 miles which could take me to June next year.
My question is: when I have it serviced next January and changed to the yearly/10000 mile cycle, is there any advantage in asking the garage to put in the fully synthetic long life oil?
The oil which I'm using to top up at present is the Comma fully synthetic 5w-30 long life vw504 00/ 507 00 ACEA A3 B4 C3.
I appreciate that using the long-life oil would be more expensive but I'd be prepared to pay more if it gave better protection.
    Is it worth it?

I'm going to make Forum history by replying to myself.
I got the dates wrong in my previous note: the Mot is due in April 2009 and that's when I'll put it in for servicing and change to 1year/10000 miles servicing.
I found from the manual that the 103 KW TDI diesel (that's the engine in the Mark 5 Golf GT TDI 140 it seems), should have oil with specification VW 505 01 when given a non-long-life service if it does not have a diesel particulate filter, but oil with a spec. VW 507 00 if it does have a diesel particulate filter.
So the oil specification depends on whether or not the car has a diesel particulate filter.
    Why are things so complicated?
Needless to say I don't know if my 06 Golf (April 2006) has or has not such a filter and clarification on this issue does not seem to be readily forthcoming from any documentation to do with my car; however I suspect that it is not endowed with said filter.
Assuming this is the case, the official VW line is that an oil with spec. VW 505 01 should be used when a 1 year/10000 mile service is carried out on my car.
Is my logic OK here and am I right in assuming that my 06 Golf GT TDI 140 will not have a particulate filter?
Working out what oil to use is taxing my tiny brain!

    Hello Hogwash,

My 08 TD 140 (103 Kw) has a DPF so I shall use VW 507. If I was uncertain as to whether my car has a DPF (as you seem to be) then I would opt for VW 507 because it is backwardly compatible and will do no harm, and only good. For the difference in price I'd rather have peace of mind.

So my answer to your question is: Yes it is worth it, for peace of mind as well as the top quality protection that it will give to your engine, whether it has a DPF or not.

    Ron
