    i have a 98 a6 2.4 v6 and when the car idles there is a whinning noise!!! does anyone know wot this could be????

    Have you opened the bonnet to try and figure out what area it's coming from?

    i.e. top end/bottom end/front/rear etc...

    this is the AGA engine, on it the alternator is very low, and can scoop water into it's bearings.

    This is the favorite noise, however, it could also be the cam belt tensioner, power steering pump or even the fan bearing.

    Access to get to this is a bit of a pain, as you need to put the front end into the service position to get to any of the above items.
