Polo Not Starting....help

I recently stalled my Polo (wearing effing great workboots !). Now the damn thing won't start. Did all the usual checks and ended up calling out roadside assistance who decides (after very extensive testing) that it's the cam belt has slipped and can do nowt with it so I have to be towed to my local garage.
My local garage have had a quick look at it and have told me it's NOT the cam-belt and they now have to do some investigations.

Engine turns over OK
Sparks at all plugs etc
sounds like it wants to start but just will not !

Has anyone got any idea's as I'm getting a bit frustrated with my Polo..............the damn thing has cost me a lot of money in the last 12 months and I don't want to go splashing out again !

Could be the immobiliser.
Does it start then cut out?

is the fuel pump working? you should hear a noise from it when you turn the ignition on

It 'wants' to start, makes all the right noises but never quite catches. I just don't know which way to turn now and am concerned that I am going to be lumbered with another whopping bill having just spent a lot of money on a new gearbox (and that was pretty soon after replacing the water pump!) oh yeah, and the drivers side door lock has given up the ghost as well....................ho hum, so much for VW reliability !

are you 100% sure the fuel pump is working? as the vapour in the lines will give you that its going to start feeling!

Okey dokey, all sorted.

It was the distributor hence sparks at the plugs but just not at the right time which is why the recovery guy thought the cam belt had slipped.

phew, that was a relief.
