Hi all, just got a mk4 golf 1.6 se cab for the other half, very clean and runs well. there are a few things that I have found not working so it would be great if any one could shed some light on my probs.

I only got one key the spare obviously, and I assume the car to be central locking, is it do you know, Main reason I ask is that the fuel flap should lock and it does not, if I went to a main dealer would I be able to get a new key and will it all work

interier light not working, where would I find the fuse? as no power to it at all, bulb is fine. Does the fuse feed anything else, as all the rest of the electrics seem to work

    cheers Mark

    What year is the car?

The key you have, does it have remote control locking buttons? Some models did not have remote control locking. It may be an import as the SE was a VAG UK concoction that was not used in Europe. The only way I can tell is from the registration number and you should not post that so you will have to PM me that when you have reached 5 posts or more.

The fuel flap is released by the button in the centre consul so it should only release when this is pressed.

The Year is "S" 1998, I have took the one and only key apart as the vw logo on it is a button, there is nowt in it.

I think the car is a mk4 but with mk3 dash, bit of a parts bin special that year.

Also the digi trip and clock in the instrument panel both revert to "0" after ignition is turned off then back on, would this be conected to the interier light prob, ie blown fuse/bad joint etc.
Where the milage is shown on start up it reads "in 02 " is this an indication that it needs a service or is it a fault code? if service needed how do I clear it. tried the vauxhall method of holding trip reset button in then turn ig on for 3 secs to no avail.

I dont think there is a button on the centre consol for the fuel flap, just had a look and there is no buttons at all.

above the cig lighter there are 2 buttons for the rear electric windows which work, inbetween is a narrow button which does not seem to do anything, the pic symbol on it looks like a door mirror with an arrow on, I am guessing that it should fold the door mirrors in when pressed

Other than buying a haynes manual where could I find info on what this switch should do.

    appriciate you help
    Thanks Mark

Update,I have sorted the trip and clock with the interier light found a fuse blown, result.
in thge boot I have found a pump with several pipes, is this the central locking mech.
if i put a voltage to the pair of wires that go to the motor will the doors lock.
reason I'm thinking is as I dont have the original key and I've found that a replacement will cost several hundred to aquire and get reprogrammed. if I use a ir remote relay it could be operated by this.

    any thoughts

    cheers Mark

I missed the very subtle “cab” bit, it is rather important! The car is a Golf 3 and not a Golf 4 so this is in the wrong section. If you look at your chassis number it will be wvwzzz1EzKW and then 6 unique numbers. The Golf 3 Cabrio uses a completely different vacuum operated central locking system to the Golf 4 electric solenoid system and remote control was not available until the 2000 model year. The big pump in the boot operates the big flappy cloth or vinyl thing on top, the small pump with one pipe and a plug is the central locking pump.

    Cheers Crasher,
I have been busy cleaning and checking electrical connections, There is central locking which is now working, using the one and only key in the door and hold it to lock or unlock you can now hear a pump/motor in the boot operating and all doors lock or unlock now plus I have found that messing with the key in the lock opens or closes all the windows. also fuel cap locks as well now.
main thing left to do now is put steering wheel on straight with out setting off the air bag.

As long as you do not have the ignition on with the air bag disconnected, you will not upset the air bag ECU and you certainly won’t trigger it unless you do something really stupid.
