    Hi,
I have been told the wiper linkage on my 2.0 bora has seized. I had a mechanic come over and he freed everything up but the wipers are still really slow and stuggling to move.
Been to one garage and they told me to get new blades (which i did!) I was then told it could be a 'lazy motor' or a bad earth. Had another mechanic over and he says it is not the motor or earth he is convinced it is the linkage. I have been told they will not ever go any faster even if i have a new linkage.
My question is this, if i get a new linkage put on, would it speed up the wipers? and any ideas how much a new linkage would be. I have been quoted by one garage of £75 per hour labour and that is just to have a look and another place much the same.

If anyone local to me has any ideas or wants to come and have a look i would be more than gratefull!!

Otherwise any ideas would be great

    Thanks

    Terri

If it doesnt fit, force it. If it breaks...it needed replacing anyway

Had this on my '99 BORA last year. The wipers would 'stall' or work very slowly - lazy is a good description.

It's a common problem with these cars apparently - and it's all down to a bit of poor design that ensures the run-off from the windscreen hits the centre pivot point on the linkage.

If you are reasonably handy with spanners etc (or know someone who is) then buy a new set of linkage parts from GSF and a Haynes manual and set aside about 1.5 to 2 hours. I guess an experienced mechanic will do the swap in 30-45 mins. But you will have paid less then this (3/4 * £75) for the parts and the manual. And a workshop would have probably charged top whack for parts on top.

The biggest problem I had was persuading the wiper arms to come off their splined mounts. If you slip whilst trying to lever them off you run the risk of cracking the screen. I found a long screwdriver and some 2*1 wood did the job in the end. When re-fitting apply a little grease to the splines prevent corrosion and difficulty in removing.

But it's basically a fairly straight forward process. The linkage I removed was really well corroded at one of the pivot points. I used a good quality grease when re-assembling in a hope of keeping the British weather off it for some time. Also do follow the tip of marking the wiper positions on the screen with masking tape - if you get them out of position then you run the risk of them interfering with each other. I found that by not fully tightening them up you could do a quick check of their position. Once you are happy - tighten up fully.

    Ha Ha do it myself!!!
I may be enlisting the help of my father in law or other half then! I really dont do the whole fixing things.

So will the new linkage make them go at a reasonable speed? i was told it wouldnt make a difference. And do you know if a golf linkage will fit the bora, as nowhere around here seems to have them!
Im luck they havnt stalled yet...but i am willing them 'up' now!
