Have been having problems from a clunking noise at rear of car. have replaced top mounting at suspension but no better. Am now about to replace the rear axle bushes (have purchased new audi ones) but cant seem to find a guide as to how to take the old ones out, have read somewhere that the bush needs hammered out and then a metal slieve removed before fitting the new bush - any advice gratefully received.

    Thanks

    William

I was hoping for some advice on what I need to remove - will the old bush come out complete, do i drill it out and is there a separate metal sleeve that need removed. I have an improvised tool that should get the new one in

You just need a big screwdriver to lever/rip the inner bush out off the housing, then you hack off the sleeve thats left on the rear axle...Grease well the new bush and the axle then proceed with fitting the bush. Mark the corect position of the bush on the axle as its very important. Keep it true and it will go in. Its a very frustrating job if you never done it before and dont have the right tools. I have done a few and i never look forward to do more...By the way, i dont use fancy tools, just good old forged G-clamps, steel washers, few blocks of wood and a dead blow hammer...

Thanks for this helpful response - is the sleeve that left behind metal or rubber. Its just that I have read you should remove the bush and the a thin steel sleeve. Don't want to remove something that should still be left in the axle.

    Regards

Thanks to adamss24 - I did the job at the weekend. Took a while to get the old bushes out and I constructed a tool with two pieces of metal pipe (70mm) and two flat steel plates with a long bolt up the centre to pull it all together, worked well and only cost about £5.60 from a local steelworks.

    Now drives much better.
