After a bit of door disassembly, I eventually found out why my driver side electric window wouldn't work - snapped cable. Worse again, the snapped cable had chewed up the pulley. To compound things, the cable runs are all gunged up.

Anyone know how much it costs for a new set of cables, cable runs and pulley assembly. Looks like bike brake cables to me (pennies), but I suspect I won't get much change out of loads of dosh from a main dealer.

    Any tips???

On my B5.5 Passat the cable/runners/pulleys all come as one part connected to the inner door skin.

I tried to repair it using bike brake cables but failed miserably.

I paid just under £50 for the "kit" from VAGParts - A VWAF sponsor.

The repair is simple if you have the tools and a warm garage.

Considering selling my VCDS KEY-USB interface. If you're interested please contact me via PM or email.

I looked in B&Q - 74p / meter for the cable. Plus some bolts filed to measure and sodler on. Reckoned the job would cost a fiver at best.

Then I went to Audi and paid £77 for the kit.

In hindsight, should have toured the scrappies !!!

i was gonna look in scrappies. but then it it worth the head work. as fault with mine was the wire had frayied and was making a really bugging sound, so if it happened to mine then y not a 2nd hand one. it comes with both runners and mech that motor bolts too. so not a bad price. could of had cables made for a fiver, but only takes em to be a little long or short.

    Window fixed tonight.

Straightforward enough if a bit fiddly and frustrating at times - loads of torx bolts of different sizes, big screws, little screws, clips, couple of broken clips.

Might have cost £77+VAT, but its saved me goodness what in labour !!!

Haynes manual came in quite useful.

Labour saving is the biggest thing.

VW wanted around £200 to investigate and then attempt a repair, add on parts, and so on and your smile becomes even bigger.

    Good work

Took me about 30 mins to get the trim off and 30 mins to get the frame out. Then an hour and a half to get it all back together again. Most of the time is taken up by looking, marking, noting, aligning and fiddling with things like the &$%£*$ bolt that goes in the side of the door above the lock.

2.5 hrs for a dumpty like me, call it 1.5hrs for a VAG tech, so that'll be another £200 +VAT to fix on top of the £200 to investigate (assume the worst) plus parts.

    Oooooouch.

A buddy of mine has a similar issue (not checked exactly what the problem is, but pretty sure its the same as this thread).

I take it there are no issues with resetting ECU / Alarm etc?
