Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is a way of resetting the ECU without getting it scanned. Iv heard disconnecting the battery 4 a hour might do it. Any ideas?

ok, first of all, a little info on how the ecu fault system works.

the car develops a fault, this is recognised by a related sensor, this sensor passes the info back to the ECU, which logs a fault code and flashes up the EMS (engine management system) light on the dashboard display panel.

until this fault is rectified, the EMS light will continue to remain. once the fault code has been read, the fault itself rectified, you can then clear the fault code and the EMS light will dissapear.

you cant just unplug the battery for an hour and the plug it back on again, this will not work. first of all, you havent fixed the fault, secondly, you will lose your radio code and risk the loss of pairing info for your alarm fob etc etc.

unless you have the facility to read codes and ensure the fault has been rectified, i would strongly advise against clearing the codes. furthermore i would say with almost certainty, not to disconnect the battery.

if i were you, id pop it down to a local independant specialist, ask them to read the codes and say what's wrong with the car.

you could, potentially be driving the car in a state wherby you are damaging the car even further.

Maybe i should of given more info in my first posting, i knew wot the fault was and had fixed it but the ecu doesnt clear till the unit is reset. Iv never had a problem with disconnecting batteries before so i did it and it worked, no fault lights now and it saved paying out to a garage!

this wont have cleared the logged code from the ecu, trust me... and i would advise against doing it again IMHO, its a bad move, but each to their own. you got the problem solved... so thats your means to the end, but for other users who may read this, i would strongly advise against ever doing this. how you knew what the fault was without reading the fault code, im unsure about, but... who knows
