Poor you! I had a 1983 polo once, exactly the same....had to part ex it in the end, as no-one had a clue what the cause was. That having been said, in the days of points etc, it might just be the condenser (in the distributor). Nowadays, with newer cars, we have none of the problems associated with points, condensers etc. It could be a 55 pence cure! (the condenser is not holding charge, therefore voltage leaks across the open points, causing kangaroos, stalls etc etc). Worth a try for less than a quid!

Has the fuel filter been checked also?
At low power requirements enough fuel might be getting through. At prolonged higher power, for example motorway, there might be just be not quite enough fuel getting through, which would gradually drain the carb, leaving you with low/no power until you stop and let it gradually fill up again.
The fuel filter is easy to change and cheap.
Good luck, and let us know when you sort it!
