If its non turbo itll be a 1Y.

Things to check in order IMO

    - Fuel Filter
    - Glow Plugs (Does the light come on when starting)
    - Coolant Temp Sensor
    - EGR/intake Blockage

Maybe FTS (Fuel temp sensor) - don't know about this tho. Them engines are usually bullet proof.

Also if there is no cold start handle (a choke like device beside the steering wheel) then there is a solenoid on the throttle cable to aid cold idling. Think these can give bother.

The 1Y has reasonable diagnostics of the pump and glow plug control system in group 41 Diesel Pump so before guessing and wasting money, get a fault code read done.

also check your fuel hoses if the fuel feed has got a hole in it it will be sucking air in ,this fault will let the engine idle but under load the engine will struggle to get enough fuel, this fault is a right bugger to find just look for an oil pacth on the lines and body were fuel will leak out of the feed line as and when you turn the engine off

Good point, also check all o-rings in the fuel lies - particularly the one on top of the fuel filter.
