Veh - VW Golf GT TDI (2000)

Ive just bought the above veh from a garage. The only problem is that when i put the heating on it blows hot air then cold and carries on like this.
I was told it was fixed because he changed the thermostat in the engine this changed nothing then changed the water pump and evrything was ok

Also when driving home a yellow coil symbol appeared on the dash and stayed on. (didnt get the vehicle manual)

    Any help please

The coil symbol in the dash is to do with your glow plugs. It should light up for a few seconds before start up and then go out showing the glow plugs are operating but if the light stays on it means there is a problem with them...
