Apologies if this is common knowledge, I did try and search but to no avail.

Whats the definition of "Red Eye" or "Red I" with regards to the early A4 1.9 TDI 110bhp cars?

I'm intrigued - whats the difference between a non Red Eye 1.9TDI 110 and a Red Eye example?

    Thanks

    Chris

I saw at least 3 or 4 up for sale being advertised as "1997 Audi A4 1.9TDI 110bhp *RED EYE*" whilst I was looking!

The red I means that there is a slightly more powerfull engine ie: 110 Bhp as opposed to the 90 Bhp fitted on base models. Engine wise identical, the difference beeing the turbocharger, nozzles and ECU...

So does that mean that EVERY one of the 110 cars is a "Red I"

    I got the impression that there was a 110, and a 110 Red I

It would make sense if the "Red I" meant that it was the 110 version

The 90 Bhp have no red I on the badge, however, they are just stick on badges. Best way to look on the logbook for the engine code: AFN- 110 Bhp (81Kw), AHU- 90 Bhp (66Kw), or on the sticker in the spare wheel well...

The badging system all made sense until the PD engine was also released in the B5 chassis.
