Hi All, I have a 97 TDi GL that is a great car but for 1 problem. The stereo fitted to it drains the battery over 4 days (removing stereo battery lasts for weeks). I also have a 95 GTI that I had the stereo in that didn't drain the battery. Any ideas on what the diferent wirings could be before I trawl thro' loom? Simon

They might be the same... i'm not sure when VW started putting ISO connectors in as standard....

Best way is to have a look. The wiring diagram will be on the stereo anyway

OK will look. Both cars do have ISO connectors but diesel seems to feed something when ignition is off. Simon.

Should be the same, my '96 has an ISO connection for the head unit.

I'm sure I've read a post that somebody put up about their head unit draining their battery whilst turned off with the ignition, I'm sure it said they started turning it off with the button before they got out (rather than letting the ignition switch it off) and it cured the battery drain.

It's possibly a faulty stereo that has a short. I'd try the "95" stereo in the "97" car and see if the problem persists....

    Good luck!

Thanks guys, Just to clarify the connections for the stereos are the same and I had both cars running the same stereo fine but the wiring must be different as the GTI stood for 2 weeks without running flat with this stereo fitted. The only difference was that I didn't have the 6 CD changer fitted to the GTI. Could it be the changer running down the diesel I wonder?

Aimed at haider (should have quoted really).

I think the fuse in the fusebox must have gone. It sounds like the stereo's getting a perm when the ignition's turned on (the wires need switching back round again) and cutting out the supply as it as the car's starting.

In short turn the wires back round again (red and yellow) and replace the fuse for the stereo if I'm right.
