My car is going through the mill at the moment. See seperate thread on damp carpets.

Anyway Ive got a slow but steady oil leak from the rocker cover. The oil appears all along the lower edge of the joint. It is dripping down onto cat and burning off.

My techy brother took it apart and refitted using silicone gasket material. We did however reuse the gasket which looked sound.

I did notice that there was a semi circular cutout and thought this might be a weak point. My local VW Inde garage has also tried and failed to solve.

    Any thoughts please.
    David

Fit a new original vw gasket this will come with the rubber half moon and if it's torqued down nice and equally you shouldn't have any more problems.

If the gasket has been replaced and it still leaks there are two common possibilities, one is that it has the early cover which was prone to warping (it changed in 98) and the other is that the breather system is blocked and causing excess crankcase pressure which is forcing the oil out and sludge build up is a terrible problem on the 1.8T, often leading to a destroyed engine and turbo.

It isn’t necessarily the tube but the whole system that becomes blocked. PM me your email and I will send you some diagrams.
