    Hi

I'm wondering if anyone can help. My missus has a 1999 Golf SDI (diesel naturally aspirated). The other day she was driving along when all of a sudden it lost most of its massive 75 hp and the engine now sounds like a load of nails in biscuit tin. The engine runs and sounds fine at tickover but under power gets really loud and rattly like an old tarctor.

We had the RAC out and they plugged in to diagnostics, he didnt give the codes but the interpretation was faults with:

    EGR valve
    Injection valve
    Induction manifold.

I have checked and cleaned the EGR valve and all seems well.

Could it be a pump timing issue or have you seen this before? does anyone have the relevant page of a Haynes or simialr manual they could email.

Any help really appreciated, we live in the middle of nowhere and she is lost without her car.

    Thanks in advance

    I'M SORRY.
i don't know the car/engine at all,but sounds like fuel pump timing.
having said that,it could be something very simple like a vacuum hose.
i can only suggest that you check the very small hoses around the engine, and then your only option would be a fault code read,at an independent garage,or dealer.
i have said that, but in reality, you should have the codes read first.
that will tell you what is really wrong, rather than guessing from 200 mls away.
    regards,
    stewy

OK help still required. Had the RAC out to see if they could shed some light on the subject. They plugged their diagnostic computer in and got the following codes out:

    1265 - EGR Valve
    1283 - Intake manifold
    1269 - Injection valve

He said take it to the garage but money is tight and if anyone can point me in the direction of something to look at I'd be most grateful.

    thanks in advance

The codes have been cleared 3 times and come straight up as soon as the engine is run. Unlikely to be all three granted, was just hoping someone may have seen this before.....
