Only got my car (A3 1.8T) the other day and just noticed that the temp gauge seems to be reading 60 unless i stop the car for a min then start it again, which it then reads 90, but after a few mins driving goes back down to 60.

I've read that its a common problem, could some one tell me what i need to change, where i can get it from and how to change it?

    Thanks a lot
    Andrew

Coolant Temp. sensor & O-ring from V.W. is about £20. Remove top engine cover & sensor is right hand side of cam cover down the back of engine. Remove retaining C-clip pull out sender & old seal, have new sensor at the ready to stop you losing coolant. Push in new sender & fit C-clip disconnect electrical connector off old sensor (push in tag/retaining clip) & pull off) connect to new sensor.
Best to do this when vehicle is cold or if vehicle warm (not baking hot) loosen coolant pressure cap first to release pressure in cooling system.
Top up coolant to maximum mark & run up to temperature with a road test.

    Jobs a gooden!
    Hope this helps

    Paul

Don’t feel too bad, I've been working on car for a good few years now.
Plus I'm a maintenance engineer for Land Rover (not working on the car tho, factory side)
