Central locking button illuminates??

Never noticed this before, (Golf Mk 5 SDI) have compared note's with a mate's car, an identical model and his doesn't do it...

When I central lock with either the key or remote the central locking button in the driver's door next to the interior handle remains illuminated until the car is unlocked. This has only been drawn to my attention by the darker evenings so I don't know how long it's been doing it, my only concern is of an unnecessary battery drain.

Anyone got any ideas...

Hi, I have a Golf 1.9 TDI 07 and just had a look on mine, nothing apart from the flashing red LED on the drivers door here.

Mmmmm... took the dog out for a walk and the light near the handle I'd mentioned earlier had gone out (but red light still flashing in top of door trim) So being brave, I opened the car again on my return with the remote, opened the driver's door fully and shut it and locked it again, the light came on again, and is still on, over half an hour ago now.


Methinks I may have a gremlin...

I just came online to post the EXACT same thing!

I'm wondering if i have a gremlin.


Here's what happened to me. Last week i noticed the doors locked button was on when my car was locked. I thought it was odd but left it.

Tonight by auto lights were on ALL the way home even though it was not dark. When i parked and locked the car the coming home lights stayed on for 30secs. After that the doors locked button stayed on.

So i'm wondering if maybe this stays on when the coming home lights have been on - to signify yes the doors are locked?


Or that could be me clutching at straws. Look forward to seeig if anyone has any idea.

It gets better....

I have now noticed a whirring noise when driving, the cooling fans are cutting in before reaching the optimum operating temperature, in my case 90 degrees and they run constantly, they seem to have a mind of there own... I have just checked the engine/hose temperature's with a hand held temperature testing device (laser), just in case, and there are no overheating issues, must be electrical then...

Oh I never had these problems with my old BMC'S, these "Modern Motors" are just too complicated and rely far to much on electronics.

An illuminated locking button (next to the interior door handle) usually indicates that the doors are locked but NOT deadlocked. You normally have to press the lock button on the keyfob twice in quick sucession to do this (A single press would activate the deadlocking).

To test this, lock the car after leaving a window open. Then reach in and pull the interior door handle twice. If the door opens, then the doors were NOT deadlocked.

If the doors are being locked but not deadlocked and you are only pressing the keyfob once, sounds like something is faulty somewhere. Either the central locking control module, possibly one or more door lock mechanisms or perhaps the keyfob.

Ahh for me that made sense. I've tried this out and it;s exactly as you say.

1 click - all is fine.
2 clicks in quick succession - little button lights up.

So the little button being on indicates deadlocks are NOT on. What exactly are the deadlocks?

I agree.

A single press of the lock button activates the locks and deadlocks - the only light on is the flashing red led in the door. 2 presses of the button locks the doors, but without the deadlocks - the red led still flashes, and the key shape button on the door illuminates briefly. My key button does not stay illuminated - that would tell thieves that the car is not deadlocked.

The deadlocks prevent somebody from smashing the window and leaning in to open the door. The door openers do not function. You should never deadlock the car when somebody is inside it.

If the car is locked, but not deadlocked, the interior door openers will open the door. However the alarm will sound.

The button thing is different to the Ford Focus - with the Ford system a single click locks the doors and a second one deadlocks it. It took me a while to get into the habit of just one click on the Golf.

Radox, I have tried spare key fob, as you've suggested, still does the same so I can pursue this further with the doors/relay. Doesn't seem so drastic now, thanks

Also worth mentioning is the fact that a double press will NOT activate the interior alarm. This can be used for locking the vechicle if a dog is inside for example. (Personally I would never lock a dog in a car but I do accept it's common practise for a lot of people).
I was "double clicking" for some month, as this was what I was used to, until I discovered the alarm was not on!!!
