Have emailed vw chairman and got a reply today from customer services
they are handing the matter over to their vw importer, requesting they take steps to investigate. Watch this space.

Been reading this thread with interest.. I have a Golf Mk 5 GT TDI 140, 54 reg.

I have used a few different types of fuel additive, some of the new 'power' fuels too, and noticed some difference on some of them, however from the trip, over the last 4k miles I've averaged 48mpg. I tend to either run it for 7 miles from home - train station and the same home again or (about every other week) have a long run of over 100 miles. Even on my journey from home to station if I'm careful about not accelerating hard I get about 50mpg, but I usually get les - circa 45. I tend to drive at about 80 on Motorways, conditions allowing, and stick to limits elsewhere.

I made a conscious effort on a recent long run to increase MPG by not driving over 80, and slow accelerating etc. The journey was from Royston, (Herts) to Newport, (Wales) then to Machynlleth, Wales and back home. All in about 520 miles. Averaged over 50mpg, I thought that this was good, however I'm starting to think that maybe I should get more too.

On the same trip I did a full to full MPG test - not sat down and worked out the numbers yet tho..

As a foot note anyone driven on the B4518 - What a Road , just a shame that it was wet, dusk and not closed to everyone else but me, it would have been a dream. Great views of the countryside though.

I posted ages ago about replacing tyres and people said they would expect good tyre wear due to my high mpg. My 04 54 2.0TDi is still averaging 53-55mpg on my 56 mile daily roundtrip.

What I will chip in is that tyre type and pressure makes a big difference. I recently did a 600 mile round trip 4 up at 56mpg. For the next week I left the tyre pressures high, 2.6 and 3.0 bar and with me only in the car I was getting 58-60mpg on my daily commute.

There is a downside regarding grip and tyre wear but a 5mpg difference is not to be sniffed at.

A friend was having some issues with his Seat 1.9tdi.

What it needed was a good thrash to decoke the engine a little if you really never rev it you can do more harm than good a nice thrash every so often does help.

Just to compare I drive a 2.0TDi 140 remapped to 183 and get 45mpg usually and 53mpg on a run and I do tend to be a little heavy with my right foot at times. I can get 28mpg but It takes a lot of effort in a diesel.

    i agree entirely.

I've been pottering to and fro from work, high gears, low revs, 50mph tops, and getting good mpg, 43 - 50 (its a twisty road). Then i'll struggle to hit 40 mpg. A short blast soon rectifies the problem and the next day all is back to normal. If i thrash it, i can gat 22mpg easy.

recently bought golf 1.9 tdi (105) on a 56 plate. Great car, love it, BUT so far fiel economy is very poor, on mixed driving and taking it easy to see what I can get, the coputer says average of 36mpg and on long run, after refueling, it only worked out at 45 mpg surerly this cant be right?
That's very poor. I have a TDI 170 golf, on local runs I get 45-50mpg and on long motorway ones 50-60mpg depending on how much of a hurry I'm in.

Even hammering it on the motorway up to Cambridge recently at 90+ most of the way I got 45mpg!

I don't know if this is relevant in any way but I have noticed that my car does take a long time to reach operating temp.
