In reply to Golf TDI you mention that your friend thought your car sounded loud, as this is my first golf but second diesel I have to say that this is my impression of my TDI at low revs ie pulling away, in fact after my Mazda 6 diesel it is very loud on low revs.
Is this the norm for the mk5 1.9 TDI or is it a Problem.

Hey HOS, well its common knowledge that Diesel cars are naturally louder as me and you are both aware. However, my friend is quite knowledgeable about cars and he said that my car sounds muchlouder than it should.. I dont have any idea, he said it could be anything and it sounds like its coming from the bottom of the car (he suggested exhaust ).. Im really worried now, I hate having car problems especially when I treat it right

From my personal experience I would say there is a problem with your car! As for what the problem actually is, I'm afraid I can't help there.

My car is a 2.0 GT TDI Golf on a 55 plate; I regularly return figures in excess of 65mpg on my drive to and from work, and It never drops below 55mpg, even on motorways or zipping around town. I usually average around 600 miles to a full tank. I believe the 1.9 TDI engine is more frugal than the 2.0; so going by comparison to my car I'd say there is something not quite right.

As for not exceeding 1800 rpm, this isn't a good idea. The engine needs to be revved every once in a while or the turbo will get blocked up.

Thankyou gentlemen for your replies, I'll be refueling tonight and will re-calculate mpg (after using fuel additive) although I dont think it has improved, I'll let you know the result. Cheers Hos.

Arghh! surfer now im worried ..

Does anyone know what the problem is?!

What I do around once a week is rip the car in high revs, because Ive been told plenty of times that the Turbo gets blocked up.. Whats the ideal way to drive the Golf then? im so confused, I thought 1800 revs and smooth gear changes was the way forward.. SOMEONE HELP

Just refueled and calculated combined mpg (taking it very steady no hard right foot) and reached the dizzy heights of 39 mpg.
    Off too the garage?

It's an interesting one this. My Mk5 has had a few probs since I bought it as an approved used car in July.

But fuel consumption isn't one of them. I'm getting just a tad below 50 and that's with quite a few short journeys (I only do 5,000 or so miles per year).

I had an air flow meter fail on a Bora TDI about 4 years ago but this was also accompanied by poor performance.

I think you should have a fault code read done and see what the garage says about the cars performance as AMM’s (MAF’s) are a big problem. If you do have one fitted, make sure it is a genuine VAG part bought from the VAG TPS or VW dealer, no where else no matter what the garage tries to say-insist.
