Hi everyone, i'm new to this, but here we go.
recently bought golf 1.9 tdi (105) on a 56 plate. Great car, love it, BUT so far fiel economy is very poor, on mixed driving and taking it easy to see what I can get, the coputer says average of 36mpg and on long run, after refueling, it only worked out at 45 mpg surerly this cant be right?

Are you based in London- I am getting between 36 - 45 mpg around town on motorway between 50 - 60 mpg (vehicle gt sport 140)

I think that sounds about right if you are London.

Possibly the car has a problem such as a faulty Air Mass Meter or a turbo vane issue and this is making the car less efficient than it should be and you would not know the differences as you have never driven it in any other state. Does it produce black smoke that you can see behind you? I would suggest getting it scanned for fault codes on the engine and maybe driven by someone who knows these cars for their opinion on how it drives as a faulty AMM often does not leave a fault code.

Thanks, I have tried fuel additive first, if this does not work I'll get the car checked out by VW and take it from there.

Ive got the same 'problem'.. Im driving a VW GOLF MARK IV TDI 1.9, I drive relatively safe (1800 revs) and try and keep to the speed limit, however I only get abour 25-40mpg, I like driving in neutral because that gives me about 199mpg, and that isnt even a joke! But like people say its bad for your car - is it really?!

And like shouldnt I be getting better fuel economy seeing as I drive in low revs and change gears on time??

Btw my friend heard my car today and said it was unusually loud, even for a diesel argh I dont want to have problems, the car has been driven well, has 67, 000 miles on the clock, full service history, two owners and in February I had it serviced and changed the cambelt and water pump..

    Help me out please

Actually, coasting down to the lights in neutral uses more fuel than backing off in a high gear. Watch the instantaneous consumption and it will read --- for no fuel use. This is due to a function known as overrun cut off that cuts the fuel completely during the overrun as the inertia of the car keeps the engine turning. Try this on an open stretch and let the car come right down to almost a stop and it will suddenly kick back in and trickle along.

In reply to Golf TDI you mention that your friend thought your car sounded loud, as this is my first golf but second diesel I have to say that this is my impression of my TDI at low revs ie pulling away, in fact after my Mazda 6 diesel it is very loud on low revs.
Is this the norm for the mk5 1.9 TDI or is it a Problem.
