Hi everyone, i'm new to this, but here we go.
recently bought golf 1.9 tdi (105) on a 56 plate. Great car, love it, BUT so far fiel economy is very poor, on mixed driving and taking it easy to see what I can get, the coputer says average of 36mpg and on long run, after refueling, it only worked out at 45 mpg surerly this cant be right?

Are you based in London- I am getting between 36 - 45 mpg around town on motorway between 50 - 60 mpg (vehicle gt sport 140)

I think that sounds about right if you are London.

Possibly the car has a problem such as a faulty Air Mass Meter or a turbo vane issue and this is making the car less efficient than it should be and you would not know the differences as you have never driven it in any other state. Does it produce black smoke that you can see behind you? I would suggest getting it scanned for fault codes on the engine and maybe driven by someone who knows these cars for their opinion on how it drives as a faulty AMM often does not leave a fault code.

Thanks, I have tried fuel additive first, if this does not work I'll get the car checked out by VW and take it from there.

That's very poor. I have a TDI 170 golf, on local runs I get 45-50mpg and on long motorway ones 50-60mpg depending on how much of a hurry I'm in.

Even hammering it on the motorway up to Cambridge recently at 90+ most of the way I got 45mpg!
