Air Mass Meter but often (incorrectly) referred to as a MAF for Mass Air Flow which is what they do but not the VAG description.

I have a Golf GT Sport 170 TDI and generally get 46-47mpg around the doors and 51-53mpg on long motorway journeys at around 80mph. It wasn't always like that though. I used to have 10% less economy and regularly had the Diesel Particulate filter clog. After VW dealership replaced the cylinder head for a minor internal mark, nothing changed. Eventually VW Germany made the dealer aware of a software update which fixed everything!

On the 1.9TDIs such as yours you should expect 45mpg ave if you thrash it or up to 55mpg driven sensibly (based upon courtesy car experience).

Car been into garage today for diagnostic check, no faults found, computer is reading is 37 mpg (ave) I get this to be about 17 mpg short of offical figures (I realise these figure are not exact). Will now refill and calculate mpg again, watch this space.

    good luck with it

I've been getting 43-47mpg mixed use, and 47 - 55mpg on motorway. Not sure if thats normal or not, but it beats the 17mpg my vectra does

One resides in the lovely surroundings of Leicestershire, where roses are red and violets are violet, after a few drinks, the lads get violent!

Ive been driving now in first second and third gear, basically whilst im changing gears and picking up speed it gives me like 15mpg but then when Im driving along the main road, gently accelerating and going at 30mph I can get around 40-50mpg.. is this okay?

I don’t pay much attention to the instantaneous consumption; I tend to go by the average.
