What is the most healthy option considered in the use of engaging ones hand brake ?

Button in ( Silent ) or Button out ( ratchet sound )

I was always told to use the silent way as the other way will wear away the teeth of the ratchet ! ?

What do you guys reckon cos a good friend of mine thinks otherwise !

i agree with you too but surely the teeth on the ratchet aren't going to wear out that quickly are they?

    Definetly silent method for me.

Throwing petrol on the fire now - wish my missus would understand that the handbrake is not a device to strengthen her grip/arms! She always pulls the lever up as far as possible, which only serves to stretch the cable.

Button out, ain't worn the ratchet out on my 40 year old motor so I think you'll be alright lads. Its only a spring lever bouncing over a ratchet. What next, only adjusting your mirrors and using sun visors ONLY when being blinded to save the hinges???
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

i think a bit of a poor example there.....

In regards to the handbrake... i always press the button in... when applying..

I thinks its a bad habit to get into listening to the clunk clunk clunk...

Also... why place extra strain on something when you dont have to??

Because then I know the spring has locked into place on the ratchet and hasn't stuck causing the lever to fall back down which could cause an accident if the driver isn't paying much attention

I think the reason for not clicking is not wear on the ratchet but the ability to strain the handbrake cable.

    I am silent
