I'll take it, BP claims that 'ultimate' will clean your fuelling system, I will be intarested to see what you find,

well turns out general opinion may have been right, tried the bp ultimate diesel out (105.9 a litre ) and i have to admit, i have noticed a definite gain in pick up and mpg! im averaging about 3/4 more mpg, which in the long run will cancel out the extra being spent on the fuel, car doesnt run anywhere near as badly first thing in then mornign (even better than when on shell) and in the run to preston and back, i averaged around 65 mpg (real life), average speed between 75/80 over 95 miles, not bad at all! so guess what im sticking with....LOL

    ok...

at my local BP...they now have some 'elite' type of petrol that you have to TYPE IN A PINCODE at the pump, to use!

Apparently, as it says on the pump...perfect for highly tuned cars and good for 'racing'..

    Racing where?!

Yeah so anyway...when should we be expecting some 'racing' diesel BP pumps

im changing my mind.... the BP stuff doesnt seem to have any gains at all in regards to MPG, i spent £18 at the pump yesterday filling up after 150 miles..... so im averaging the same MPG on the ultimate as i was on the shell, except, shell is 15p a litre cheaper! back to shell it is.....

Trust me - Diesels are not all the same, by a long chalk.

There is a difference between the standard grades, but its not so much that I have been able to determine if Esso or Tesco are better for example.

However, BP Ultimate, the only premium diesel I have so used, is FAR superior to any standard fuel in my VW 130PDi at least. It is also FAR more expensive because around here BP are the most expensive anyway and add a premium for diesel and then 8p for Ultimate.

So what does it do for me:-

    Quieter (much)
Far more torque (as if you didn't have enough already)
And torque even further down the rev range (as if it wasn't soooo low already)

I cannot comment on economy because that is so variable on weather and journeys - given that it is burning that much more cleanly it must be capable of better economy, but I tend to use the performance advantage.

I did find in France that their standard supermarket fuel is nearly as good as BP Ultimate - all the benenfits above and I did see a better fuel economy returned too. French fuel by law is different to ours (5% BIO) and I can only comment that this means better.

Finally, I don't buy the "Supermarket fuel is rubbish" line. In my petrol car I use Tesco 99 - it is superior to BP Ultimate Petrol and Shell V-Power Petrol. This has been confirmed by a six month 10,000 mile trial by one of the tuning companies. So mostly the benefits are down to Octane. With Diesel I expect most of the changes are down to Cetane (the Diesel equivalent of Octane).

If Tesco start a premium Diesel product I will be there, but I would concur that I have found Tesco std Diesel to be a little poor, but then again I am not that impressed with Esso std Diesel either.

Shell V-Power Diesel looks set to add competition for BP and I hope that will drive the price down.

You pays your money at the end of the day. If you have a diesel just because its cheap to run, then stick with the low end gear. You might consider Millers Diesel adative at 2p/litre. But if you like Diesel for its grunt and enjoy the power, give the premium guys a go.

I also must finally say that the improvements do increase a little more after a few tanks, and some of the benefits will remain for a while if you drop back to regular, so I guess there is more to it than just Cetane (to contradict myself!).

been using shell v-power diesel for about 2000 mile now and it burns cleaner as i has seen less smoke in peoples headlights when speeding away from them at the lights.

bit more expensive than the bp ultimate stuff but petter performance and just as good fuel econnemy.

car also seems smoother too when under hard acceleration.

shell v-power the tops for me !!

Interested in your price info. In Dorset Ultimate is £1.12 per litre and V-Diesel £1.03 !!, so you know what I am trying next. Around here BP are very very expensive.

In fact to keep competition alive, lets all agree they are equal and buy the cheapest of these two. Bearing in mind the actual fuel cost is only about 20p per litre for regular, they are adding up to 40% premium for these fuels and you are not telling me that it costs that much extra to do what they do to them - they are raking it in. But between enthusiasts and company fuel card users, they reckon there are enough people who are sufficiently insensitive to price.

SO here is a green policy Mr Brown - performance fuels are better for the environment (less pollutants, more mpg). So tax oil companies (not the fuel), according to the proportion they sell of each. In other words, force them to reduce the price of premium fuels because it will hurt their profits if they don't.
