    Hi
New to the forum and wondered if anyone could help.
    I have a Passat TDi 1.9 2003.
In the past few weeks the air conditioning is making a quite audible (and annoying!) whirring sound. However, when I turn the air co to ECON setting, the whirring disappears.
This problem seems to have coincided with the installation of a new cam belt - but this may just be a coincidence.

If anyone can help advise what the probable cause is I would be very grateful.

    Cheers

I'm interested to know the outcome of this as my mate's B5 developed the same problem in the last couple of weeks, his is a deep drone that at times you can feel resonating through the car.

It sounds like a problem with the compressor, Has the A/C been regassed lately? They make a drone when they are overcharged (too much gas ,ive done it on a pajero)

It hasn't been regassed (he's too tight to turn it on, let alone regassing it ), permanent econ. But the car was serviced a couple of weeks ago.

To do the TB the Compressor drive belt is removed, I suspect it have been refitted and over tensioned. Take it back and get *** checked out. Yes in Econ mode the compressor does not run. Regards Peter

Many thanks for the suggestions chaps.

I think it sounds like the the issue is with the belt tension.

    Regards

If the outside temp is less than the temp requested then it does not use the A/C compessor except when first driven after being parked in the sun. If it is cool outside it is better to leace the the A?C off by sellecting Econ. Regards Peter
