Every manufacturer says there product is best but its a case of you get what you pay for,on my passat ive used a few brands of synthetic and do my oil changes every 6 months just to play safe(£60 yearly cheaper than a new turbo or engine)and my car runs smooth.use branded synthetic oil only at usually £35 a 5l bottle.your filter can go for the yearly change depending on miles you do.

well i think every 6 month's is a bit excessive. good quality synthetic should last 10,000 / 12 month's easy in the uk especially @ £35 a go...
I use Fuchs tytan syn longlife vw506.01 and that's 20,000 / 2 years for the pd tdi although i will probably change it sooner than 20,000.
    £60 x 8 years = £480 just on oil then you have filters.imho

never had any probs with it....i even seem to get more mpg with it as it reduces friction in chambers...engine braking is reduced due to above, but that is nothing really...

Use a VW approved 502.00 oil. Popular choices are Mobil 1 0w40, or Castrol Syntec or Valvoline 5w40. Not sure if both of these are available in the UK. I believe these may be available for you (Elf Excellium LXD, or Motul E-Tech 8100) in the 5W40 weight.

Here is VW's list for North America.

Here is a great resource for oil questions in general.
