Did anyone see in the paper a few days ago, another euro directive due, i believe in 2010.
from then, motor manufacturers will be under no obligation to divulge
    passwords,codes,etc to non dealerships.
ie. they will keep the info within the dealers.
imagine the affect on the independant garages.
    bad news,in my eyes.
    regards,
    stewy.

I heard about it a couple of months ago I think. It is wrong wrong wrong. This just gives the dealers the option to charge what they like.

And Stewy stop talking to yourself

thing is guys, if they say it cant be done, someone will find a way and sell their find to the garages or a piece of equipment, i bet when vw started using diagnostics they didnt offer any info for free, hence vag com etc, i wouldnt worry, people always find a way

i could list hundreds of items/sevices that have been cracked open or used to get it either cheaper or free that are the 'new big thing with built in security features that are uncrackable'

chip and pin anyone? probably one of the stupidist ideas recently seeing as people hack banks and accounts and find info left on buses etc, you only need to know 4 numbers, you dont need to know a signature and the vendor wont question you if you get it right. bro is in the met police and sees all the scams/teqniques that people are using.

I would be very surprised if that legislation goes through. It's a ridiculous idea, and could end up putting the likes of Crasher out of work.

The main dealers and independents should be co-operating with each other, like they were in my Toyota days.

They already do keep that info to themselves, have you tried to get an SKC code from VAG? How about workshop info, ohh yes it’s available legitimately but the prices are stupid, 2850 Euro’s a year for each of the four brands!

I do indeed know about the SKC code thingy. We should all be given this information as owners of the vehicle.

I understand its some sort of Geko system that is used???

Yes it is a VAG only internet comms system to do all sorts of jobs, the exact details of which I don’t know as I don’t have it. If Block Exemption isn’t renewed I will be able to carry on no problem but independents that work on a variety of cars are going to struggle.

I use geko on line and i use it every day for all kinds of applications but mainly for replacing control units which are componant protected (theft proof) i also use vcds 904 at home and this has limitations with newer vehicles especialy 2008 onwards as i cant enable control units.Vag commander is crap and only viable for older vehicles. So it will some impact on my charity work when vehicles come out of warrranty and there is no way around componant protection.I suppose i will also have to pay time taken labour times to release control units and keys and i will being doing it,bugger.
