Audi A4 starting problems

Hi all im having problems starting my 96 Audi a4 1.9tdi 110bhp it sometimes starts 1st time and after five attempts on other times this can happen when the car is both hot and cold i have changed out the glow plugs and the relay for the glow plugs based on advice from an earlier posting but there is still no difference,any help wopuld be much appreciated.

does it atrt then die, or no start at all?

do you get allot of black smoke once it starts?

This may help decide if it immobiliser or engine related.

Have you had the fault code read?

Hi and thanks for the reply it starts then dies and no there does not appear to be a lot of smoke.?

Oh and there is no fault code that i can see.Also after the glow plug light goes out the immobilizer light goes out but then reappears and continues flashing intermittently till it does start up properly.
