A3 1.8t Cambelt Snapped!!!!!!!

Basically last night I decided to leave my car at home and go out in my mates A3 1.8T (bad mistake) Whilst going down the motorway the Cambelt decided to snap leaving us stranded on the hard shoulder, whilst sat there reflecting on what had just happened it occoured to me that I could be heading for the same fate as the Cambelt on my A3 1.8T is over due to be changed as far as I am aware, my car has 82,000 miles, FASH and has been remaped by Revo, am i running a high risk of mine snapping if I dont get it changed soon? Does anyone know the extent of damage that would have been caused to my mates car and how much including labour it will cost to get sorted, ive heard these sort of things are expencive!!!!!! Dont take the risk of it happening to yours as well, and get the tensioner and waterpump changed at the same time!!!!

Not sure specifically will have been damaged but it aint gonna be peanuts!!
I would think, although an expert will probably put me right,
There will be bent/broken valves, possbly damaged piston crowns, possibly damaged turbo.
Basically, the head needs to come off for investigation into the extent of the damage.....sorry dude that it aint better news!

Timing belt, waterpump and tensioner are recommended to be changed at 60,000 miles by Audi enthusiasts. Audi say 80,000 I think it is now (or maybe was?) but definitely needs done before.

Get it done ASAP before you need to fork out a shed load on your engine!

Depends on the damage but I try and get people to have a genuine VAG exchange head as for some odd reason these have a habit of dropping valves after a rebuild, especially when using pattern valves. The head genuine is £1500 plus fitting so at least another £1k with labour and all the parts required such as belts, water pump, head set, bolts, gaskets not in the head set etc etc.

If his not going to get an exchange head and reuse the old get the valve guides thoroughly checked as i have had problems with them on a golf gti before.

Hi, was rebuilding one of these some time ago and i had one exhaust valve breaking at the stem/collet groves...lucky the head was not fitted yet on the car. I bought 8 exhaust valves from Euro Car Parts, they gave me 4 made by Federal Mogul with the head welded onto the stem and 4 made by Intervalve(Sweeden) one piece valve. The one that broke was Federal Mogul one and i took all 4 back and replaced them with Intervalve ones ! I reckon that is the reason they snap, the material being too britle/hard, however they reckon that the valve spring is not located in the right recess thus sitting at an angle and putting pressure at the collet location making the stem snap. The Intervalve ones are high tensile steel and OEM supliers as well, used them for years and never had a problem before ! However, the parts cost close to £500 on trade and there is 2.3 days to work on the car as well, so i think 1500 quid at the dealer is money well spent !
