    Hi,

I am currently going through, what seems to be a common fault between VW and Audi owners the dreaded IGNITION COIL FAILURE....

Just a few questions if anyone can help..
    1. Can you buy a bracket to keep your coils down (I have noticed the screw holes on each side of the coil)
    2. I have bare wire's leading up to the coil (never seen that when I bought the car) if I need to replace them can I buy performance leads
A link would be so helpful.

    Thank you,
    SanderCH...

    Thank you,

You dont say what year or model you have but must be 1996 on.Bare wires allow damp and that causes a short circut so bye bye coilpacks hello doctor(after getting coil price quotes).Buy new coils only as used ones are risky and as for performance leads, the main dealer supplied parts or a bosch set are more than adequete as no ht lead will give you performance alone or make any significant improvement to fuel economy or power(exept in comic books). My passat 1.8t has no ht leads only wire connectors to the coils so you must have the twin coil pack setup and before fitting new parts clean all electrical sockets including in the new ht leads with wd40 to prevent moisture.I dont know how your coils are mounted on the engine but the rest of the vw owners have the coils clamped with origional fixtures so check out a breakers yard if unsure or a google search for pictures.

Dont mean to sound sarky but if you click on my pic of the golf under my username it gives you all the info:

Its a 2001 golf gti 1.8t 20V the coil packs are mounted the same as yours and dont have the ht leads but i hear you can still get the silicone wire's for our moddles

I know the holes are there for the clamps but the car has non on and as far i as i know it never has.. iv tried braker's bur cant find the clamps from any golf so dont know if the golf had them and dont know if a passat clamp would fit

the first time the coil failed i was told it was because of the damp shorting them out but as i had just bought i wanted vw to pay
but it's not in the warrenty..

do you know the cost of these wire's being replaced ????

    thanks

Well that settles that then, there are no clamps on my coils(x 4) just 2 screws on either side of the coil body that holds it down(do not over tighten as the plastic body snaps easily)make sure the thin rubber seal at the bottom of the coilpack is intact otherwise replace it.WD40 on every surface stops the damp and as for the sockets connecting to the coil do them also.as a rule i spray wd40 around the coil area and use a rag to swab it away so as to stop potential damp starting out but if you lift your coils out clean them around the body and plug stems(long tubes like ht lead end caps)and use a earbud to lube the inner plug cavity.I dont know of the leads but it's part of the loom so i wouldnt bother unless it unplugs further towards the firewall but as i remember you cannot replace them exept cutting them out of the main loom.
