Gearbox problems

My first post so here goes -- just recieved notification that my A6 Avant Sport 2.5TDi has gearbox problems. The car has high pitched whine over 1500 revs and has gradually got worse. The car (05 plate) is 5k over 60000 mile warrenty and is 6 months over 3 yrs.
My question - has anyone experienced how strict Audi UK is around good will claims in respect to major component failure outside of warrenty - Bill is likely to be over £2k.....

I would be interested in how you get on. My 1.9 TDI A6 seems to have a syncro problem going into third (slight click). She is 6 months over the three years with 55K on the clock. Having not spoken with Audi yet about it I am am hopefull with the FSH that it will be an out of warranty claim.
I have heard that BMW will charge you for the labour in similar circumstances, which is still a lot of money.
