When driving on long journeys, after a period of time the turbo stops working and the car drives like an normally aspirated 1.9 - i.e. no grunt at all. However simply by pulling over, stopping the engine and restarting it again clears the fault, but if continuing the journey it will persistently return. Any one any ideas on this. It never occurs on short journeys.

not too sure but i would recommend taking it to a garage to see if there is any damage cos it will be cheaper to repair than to replace!

    Get the fault codes read.

Limp mode can be caused by several different problems, but all are easy to identify and remedy.

I had exactly the same problem a couple of times, and now i sometimes wonder if it is down on power sometimes, but can never be sure, sometimes thing its in my head. There were a couple of times on the motorway however when there was very definate power loss, as though the turbo just wasnt actuating. No black smoke though and recently the fuel consumption has increased noticably. used to guarantee to average around 48mpg on a constant 80 mph motorway run, now its around 42.

Only fault codes are on-going inlet manifold flap motor fault, which im ignoring and am pretty sure its nothing to do with that, as it defaults open and if closed the car just wouldnt run.

Could this be the MAF? Is there anything else which would cause these symptoms?

If you had an older VE engine (90 & 110bhp) with bad mpg I would first check your static injection timing, MAF, check & clean the turbo VNT mechanism, new fuel and air filters, and maybe clean the injectors and egr.

On a PD engine, check MAF, MAP sensors and clean VNT mechanism + filters.

I have also found a small difference depending on where i fill-up.

    Its a PD (2.0TDI remapped)

Is there any way to check the MAF and MAP, or is it a case of change and see if there is any difference, assuming they are giving no fault codes and the fault is intermittent?

I'm not convinced its the MAF. I have disconnected it as i did when i had the problem on my TT a few years ago. On the TT it defaulted to open and ran smooth but with the Turbo still working. Disconnecting the MAF on the A3 doesn't effect. Bearing in mind also that a simple turning off and back on of the ignition sorts the problem every time
