Is the carpet wet in the front passenger footwell, it could be the the dreaded blocked bulkhead drains again.

No, carpet is dry. May also be worth noting the led display on the dash which shows when a door, the boot or bonnet are open does not indicate the drivers door as being open.

    Any other thoughts?

Get a Vagcom scan to check for logged faults
I would check all the fuses.
Check for broken wires where the loom enters the drivers door, these are known to break.

I checked the fuses first and they were fine but I will check the wiring for breaks and if that turns up nothing have it scanned.

    Many thanks

    Hi,

It sounds like you may have got water in your central locking pump. This is located in the off side rear of the car inside some foam. when you get water inside your pump, all your elec windows and interior lights stop working as well.

let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Autotechnik

Thanks for this Autotechnik. When the drivers door is open there is a round plastric cover about the size of a penny on the door edge that faces the central strut. I have removed this and found underneath a metal cylinder with a 'star' screw in the end. If I move this cylinder everything works again but once I have opened and closed the door a couple of times it all packs up. I have yet to take the door apart and find out if there is a lose wire on this cylinder but I noticed on another thread someone with Passat reckoned his door registered open or shut by means of magnets in the door. Could this be something to do with it. I can find no switches which would activate when the door is closed.

Did you find out how to fix this problem? I have the same symptoms on my A4 (elec windows & mirrors not working, courtesy lights not working, dash doesn't detect drivers door opening).

    Thanks

andrew, i had the same problems with my 2002 2.5 tdi, checked the water leak issue with battery bulk head drainage holes these were ok. checked the central locking pump this was dry so give in and sent it in to be checked by local garage. they found two broken wires on my drivers door side, wiring loom in the door hinge rubber, they managed to repair it but said it may not hold up for to long. a new loom is about £100 + fitting. hope this helps
