On the tdi's, a common fault is the MAF meter, aka air mass meter, easy 5 min fix, cheap too

You must start by taking the car to a garage for what is known as a fault code read. You need to ask them to read, print and clear any codes present. Then take the car away and drive it around for a few days to get the problem to re-occur and then take it back for another read and print. Any codes that come up the second time can be treated as real (as long as no one plays around in the engine bay in the period between the two code reads) and then you can post both results on here if you like for us to take a look at. If you wish, post the first results and second one as you get them so we can get an idea of what is going on. Can you also find out the engine code for your car as there are a number of different 1.9 TDI engine possibilities for that year, each of which has their own particular issues? Typically a fault code read will cost you between £25 and £30 at a non franchised VW dealer with some garages (like myself) offering the second read for free.

Hi i have had the same problem. i took the car to a local garage and booked it in for next week to be looked at. On the way home i noticed alot of smoke from the back, a nasty noise from under the bonnet and no turbo power. I take it a new turbo is needed?

Not necessarily, it may have just blown off a charge air hose.

As Crasher says, its likely to be a boost pipe of some sort.

Lift the bonnet, take the engine cover off and check the intercooler pipe, its a fat, black pipe that connects to the EGR valve.

This came partially dislodged in my T5 van, causing the same problem that you describe. The metal lugs had worn away making it loose. The new pipe cost around £50 from VW.

    Thanks guys

I will wait to see what the garage says and i will take her home and check what you have suggested.
I dont mind paying out for a turbo as long as that is the fault. I just dont wont to get ripped off.

    cheers again
