    Very sorry to hear that bad news mate but let that be a lesson to all and sundry. A healthy turbo makes very little noise....... maybe a slight whine/whoosh.
    An un-healthy turbo makes a lot of noise like a whistle or a howl, usually as a result of loss of balance. I have had KKK blowers last 10 years -150K and still running OK. Basically on big trucks, we HAVE to let them warm up steady 10-15 min before they are hammered. Same goes for little 'uns...!!

    Had to say exactly without see the old unit. But basically a turbocharger needs to be cared for, allow time for them to warm up before heavy work, allow time for them to cool down after heavy work before stopping engine. Naturally a turbo needs a quality oil in there not some cheapo stuff. You have to let a turbo cool down with engine idleing for a few minutes to allow oil to carry a lot of the heat away for a while. If not, the oil will be cooked and oxidise in the galleries from the residual heat. The oil will coke up and this is just inviting trouble, this is why you see truckers leave their engines running a while in service stations before they stop the engine. Worst thing we car/van drivers can do is to pull off the motorway and stop the engine immeadiately while its still very hot. Much better to let things cooldown for a few minutes before stopping, even better the leave engine running if you are just filling tank up!! Same applies at night when you get home, drive nice and slow for the last 3-4 miles and let it cool down a bit. Dont believe me...? Open the bonnet as soon as you get home and stick your face down near the back end above the exhaust and feel the heat rising up from the blower region...that mother will be hot!
    Depends what your remap involved, was it done to over-boost the inlet pressure or was it done to cure over-fuelling?? Over-boost will make the unit spin faster and so the balancing will become critical, if it was not quite right then the overboost will make things even worse. Whatever the map though you still have to use high quality oil, change it regular and frequently. I change at 10k whatever because its just a few quid for oil compared to a turbo!! There are loads of re-mapped engines out there so I dont think that would cause problems...if you use yoour 'ed lad!

    The KKK is generally a quality piece of kit in my experience...as said before. Anyway.... DO NOT use VW dealers except for warrenty work, I would rather set fire to my car than put it through a main dealership.
    Try these people;

    All you have to do is get the turbo off and over to them. Its difficult on a T5 to remove, you will need a 4-post lift and work from below. Its a bit of a knuckle-skin remover but saves some cash.
    Good luck.

    Much depends on what went wrong with the turbo, if the exhaust turbine bit blew / shattered then the bits will have 'harmlessly' traveled down the exhaust into the CAT and DPF and possibly lodged in there.
    If the compressor bit blew .....that thats bad.....bits can only go one direction....into the engine!

    You need to see whats wrong with the old unit first, usually its the bearings that fail and the rotor rubs on the casing somewhere. This is not so bad a scenario as a catastrophic failure, a rub simply generates fine particles as the wheels grind themselves away on the casings and send a shower of fine particles / fillings into or away from the unit up the exhaust or down the inlet tract.
    Yes it was wrong to drive 20 miles with a sick turbo. It depends a lot on luck now and if you are a gambling man???

    ps. good luck mate!
